history of
Xavier university of louisiana

The Full Story

Being America’s only Historically Black and Catholic University is just the first of the distinctions that have set Xavier University of Louisiana apart for more than eight decades.

Despite its relatively small size (3,300 students), Xavier is a nationally recognized leader in the STEM and health sciences fields, producing more African American students who graduate from medical school each year than any other university in the United States. Its College of Pharmacy is also among the top producers of African American pharmacists.

A Prayer for the Centennial Year

Holy and Almighty God,

Creator of all good:

We come with humble hearts

thanking You for the priceless gift of time

and the prophetic vision of St. Katharine Drexel.

Both African Americans and Native Americans

were blessed by her generosity.

Saddened by systemic racism in society

and inspired by her love for

the never-ending sacrifice of the Eucharist,

she poured her earthly inheritance and herself into

the heavenly goals of justice and equality

in education for all

and without reservation.

Sustaining God,

we trust in your Word and revel in your love.

Time has kissed the work of progress

and with the diligent work of the

Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament

and the faculty and staff past and present,

Xavier University of Louisiana,

in the Crescent City of New Orleans has grown and flourished

and now celebrates one hundred years of service.

The worthy pursuit of educational parity

and Your redeeming and gracious care, O Loving God,

keeps our school in harmony with the founder’s oft repeated adage:

“With God’s help there is nothing to fear.”

With Your love stamped in our hearts,

we, Your adopted sons and daughters,

give praise through your Son, Jesus the Christ,

with the help of the Holy Spirit

proclaim without fear:

Amen! Ashé! – It Is So!
